COSTA RICA REGIONS:
CENTRAL VALLEY:
SAN JOSE: Main entryway to the country and point of start of most
of the travelers. The Central Valley houses seven of Costa Rica’s
National Parks, including Arenal National Park in the border with the
Northern Plains Region. San Jose is a good base for visitors interested
on going to Poas Volcano, to practice white-water rafting and on
visiting the best museums in the country. San Jose also has good
shopping areas.
SAN RAMON, ALAJUELA: If you are definitely not the big city-type person Alajuela is an option for when you are arriving or leaving Costa Rica. It’s located about ½ hour northwest to San Jose International Airport and can serve you as a base for your trips to Poas Volcano, white-water rafting or as a starting point for your trip to the other regions of the country.
LA FORTUNA (ARENAL AREA): In the border with the Central Valley Region, La Fortuna proudly houses Arenal Volcano, one of the most visited sites in the country. Arenal last big eruption happened in 1968 but the lava still constantly flows. The main attractions in the area, besides the volcano, are thermal waters, Arenal Lake and hiking trips in the local forests.
SARAPIQUI AND GUAPILES: Located in the Central Valley, not far from San Jose, this area is the base mainly for visitors on their way to Braulio Carillo National Park’s largest segment. The main attractions in this area are: the national park itself, a rain forest aerial tram, La Selva Biogolical Station and the Neotropico Center (museum, botanical garden and archeological site). The national parks in the area were created with the main function of preserving the nature around the volcanoes of the region.
CARIBE:
PUNTA UVA, PLAYA CHIQUITA, PUNTA COCLES: High quality beaches allows adventure and natural history activities which definitely compliment with culture, gastronomy and music. Stand out the reefs, multicolor-sanded beaches (from black to yellow and gray), coastal vegetation and medium-high forest. Green turtle’s nesting (seasonable) on Tortuguero National Park and bass ‘s, shad’s and other species’s sport fishing at Barra del Colorado National Wild Life Refugee represent the main attraction of the region. It is complimented with the river channel’s system, wich connects Moin Port with Barra del Colorado, and has become a singular attraction and the only way of transportation.
CENTRAL PACIFIC:
MANUEL ANTONIO AND JACO BEACH: Most popular beach destination in the country due to its proximity with San Jose and also to Manuel Antonio National Park, Jaco quickly became one of the hot spots in Costa Rica. The region’s main attractions are its coast and the protected wilderness areas. Also worthy of note is the scenic drive along the coastal highway that links Quepos to Manuel Antonio. Manuel Antonio National Park is one of country’s most visited parks and has an astonishing variety of sceneries and wildlife. Surrounded by lush and tropical wet forest, the park’s trails offer sightings of white-faced monkeys, coatis, raccoons, squirrels and innumerous bird species. The park also protects 12 islands that serve as refuge for several seabirds species.
SOUTHERN PACIFIC:
TORTUGA, OSA PENINSULA, DOMINICAL, PUNTA UVA: The main activities include beach enjoyment and marine resources, such as whales and dolphin’s observation (both seasonable), as well as mangrove swamp’s, landscapes, reptilian, sport fishing, surfing, hiking through the National Park’s paths, professional diving, the energetic walks to the Chirripo’s summit, botanical gardens, protected areas’ impressive waterfalls… Ecotourism features as the main product, especially the one that is carried out among the Humedal Sierpe-Térraba; the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve, the Ballena Marine National Park, the Isla del Caño Biological Preserve and the Corcovado National Park.
SAN VITO, COTO BRUS: Located in the South of the country, in the border with Panama, this region is used as a base for trips to the National Parks in the area. It’s a more secluded area, not laying by the ocean like nearby Manuel Antonio and Quepos. Road conditions can be rough during the rainy season.
NORTHERN PACIFIC:
TAMARINDO, TAMBOR, SAMARA AND THE BEACHES:There are beaches of white sands and a peaceful sea qualified by intense blue, especially the ones located inside Papagayo’s Gulf (Nacascolo, Virador, Iguanita and Panama). The main resources of the unit are the beaches. It has a extended potential for the development of beach combined products and natural resources such as the spectacular arriving of the turtles Lora in the Wild Life National Refuge Ostional and the estuary and mangrove swamps of the south side, specially those who divide the beaches of Islita, Bejuco, San Miguel, Coyote and Guiones. The mangrove swamp are excellent conserved and are ideal sites for the bird sight and other type of fauna as well as the practice of light sports as the “kayaking”. Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast is also well-known by international surfers who come from around the world to catch the perfect wave.
PALO VERDE: Palo Verde occupies an area made up of floodplains and saltwater and freshwater lagoons and marshes, habitat for the greatest concentration of aquatic birds in Costa Rica. Species that can be observed here include jabirus, black-bellied whistling ducks, Muscovy ducks, herons, blue-winged teals, ibises and great blue herons. Close to 300 bird species have been identified in this national park, which is thought to be one of the best bird-watching areas in Central America.
NORTHERN PLAINS
RINCON DE LA VIEJA AND LIBERIA:
Rincon de la Vieja National Park comprises nine volcanic cones and one lake, La Jilgueros. It’s an excellent spot for hiking and waterfalls, coldwater springs and the volcanic craters can be reached by foot. Nearby Liberia is Costa Rica’s second city is a typical flatland town with wide streets and colonial constructions. The city has managed to combine old edifices, customs and traditions with modernism and new buildings, including malls and various services. More recently Liberia is also operating an international airport with direct flights from/to the U.S. and can be an option if you want to start and finish your trip in different spots (trips around the country usually start and end in San Jose).
MONTEVERDE:
MONTEVERDE: The Monteverde tourism zone is known around the world for its conservation efforts and lifestyle centered around respect for nature. Though its main attraction is the Monteverde Biological Preserve, the region also features a variety of natural places, picturesque paths, flora- and fauna-watching opportunities, natural landscapes and more. At Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve visitors will contemplate approximately 400 different species of birds, 490 of butterflies, more than 100 species of mammals and more than 2,500 different species of plants (500 of them are orchids).
